Fire Eagle

Fire EagleNew since version 0.3.2: Minimap is able to access and update your Fire Eagle location from the sidebar or Map Tab.

Privacy/Securty statement:

I do not track or store your Fire Eagle location on a web server of any kind. Your current/last known location is stored locally on your PC within your Firefox profile as one location.
Your unique Fire Eagle user/application Fire Eagle key is stored in Firefox's Password Manager, for added security you can use the Master Password functionality of said manager.
If you have a security or privacy concern (for example using a shared computer), after every session go to the Fire Eagle toolbar button and select Disable Fire Eagle - this will delete your current/last known location from your profile and erase the API key (Firefox 2 users, see footnote).

Authorisation:

Step1. Open the sidebar or map tab and click on the Fire Eagle toolbar button. Select Authorise Fire Eagle from the drop down menu. You will be directed to the Yahoo! Fire Eagle website where you need to confirm access for Minimap and select the level of detail you wish to grant the addon for accessing location updates.

Step2. Once you have authorised Minimap at Fire Eagle's website, go back to Minimap and click on the Fire Eagle toolbar button again. This time select Finsh Setup from the drop down menu. After 10-15 seconds Minimap should finish it's connection to Fire Eagle, add an address list entry and a new input area.

Functionality:

Minimap has Fire Eagle support spread throughout the addon rather than one, distinct area.

Address list: An address list entry will be created and given the title 'Fire Eagle location'. You can then use all of the context menu functionality available to address list items such as lookups to web services and directions. An additional context menu item allows you to add the Fire Eagle location to your address list as a separate, permanent entry.

If you right click on any other address list entry, a menu item allows you to use that entry to set your Fire Eagle location.

Fire Eagle Tab: For a quick free form update of your current location, use the Fire Eagle tab (appears as a separate box in the Map Tab). You will see in the image below that Altitude in meters and the time -/+ GMT is given (does not take daylight savings into consideration)

tab

Fire Eagle toolbar button: Reverse geocode the centre lat/lng using the Fire Eagle toolbar button drop down menu, then use to update your location and (optionally)  add the results to your address list.

Footnotes:

Firefox 2 Users: To delete the unique API key, open up your password manager and find the two entries starting with the url chrome://minimap/ and manually remove them.

NoScript Users!

If you use the NoScript addon, please allow maps.stcstm.org (the map at the heart of the Minimap addon). Symptons of NoScript affecting Minimap include a sidebar that will not close.
